With a release date just one day into the summer season, Sunday Morning’s new EP Forget Me Nots is great driving around with the windows down music. The New Haven, Connecticut band has an enticing sound that will satisfy post-hardcore and alternative fans alike.
Opening with the shortest track, Weight, the vocals are reminiscent of Four Year Strong, particularly their album In Some Way, Shape, or Form. This song sets the tone for the album quite nicely and gives the listener a good idea of what lies in store.
Broken Glass is a highlight and arguably the strongest song of the bunch. With an incredibly catchy chorus added to the impressive riffs, this track will resonate with fans and shows why Sunday Morning has been chosen to support artists including Microwave and Boston Manor on tours. The follow-up track, Agonize, is close to the level of Broken Glass with another catchy chorus and riffs that would not be out of place on a Drug Church album. Unfortunately, the falsetto in the chorus comes across as clunky and unnecessary.
The title track does not stand out much from the pack musically, but it does contain perhaps the strongest lyrics on the EP. “Maybe I knew you in a past life/Maybe one day I’ll see you again/I get the feeling you’d be just fine/To never even think of me again” and “Color me the shade you want me to be/Feels like we’ve missed our mark entirely/What good is silver and gold to a ghost?/When you can’t have the one you want the most” are standout lyrics that would’ve made for good away messages had this EP come out twenty years ago.
The final two tracks, Mon Calamari and Cordially, both have similarstructures as they start out as slower ballad-type songs before climaxing about midway through. From a track sequencing standpoint, the EP could have benefited by separating these two songs. In any case, these are well-written and end the EP on a high note.
Sunday Morning clearly has a lot of potential, and it will be exciting to see what is in store for the band in the years to come. For now, go on a twenty-minute drive and jam this EP and also be on the lookout to catch them in a supporting slot the next time they tour in your area.
